For Jim, being a good judge means being a good neighbor.

Throughout his career, Jim has dedicated countless hours to making Nashville a better place. From youth mentorship programs to bar association leadership, he believes that those in positions of responsibility have an obligation to lift up their community.


His work extends beyond the courtroom walls — into schools, community centers, and wherever young people need guidance and support.

Jim's Community Work

Judge Dinkins Educational Center

Jim spent 20 years working to create the JDEC, which opened in 2024. This center provides at-risk youth ages 14-18 with trade education in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, welding, and masonry — giving them real skills and a path to a better future.

Youth Mentorship

Jim has mentored countless young people throughout his career, helping them navigate life's challenges and find their path. He believes in the power of guidance and second chances.

Bar Association Leadership

As an active member of the Nashville Bar Association and Tennessee Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Jim works to improve the legal profession and ensure justice for all Nashvillians.

Criminal Justice Reform

Jim has served on numerous boards focused on criminal justice reform and youth development, working to make our system more fair and effective for everyone.

Grammy-nominated artist Jelly Roll was once a troubled teenager in Nashville's justice system. Today, he's become one of country music's biggest stars and a champion for at-risk youth.

In partnership with the Grand Ole Opry, Jelly Roll helps fund and promote the Judge Dinkins Educational Center that's giving other young people the second chance they need.
